About this Event
This tour will be led by archaeologist John Kelly, PhD. Travel to the rally point is on your own. We will first meet up at McDonald's in Vienna at 10:30 am where we will convoy to Millstone Bluff Archaeological Site. There we will have a guided 1-hour tour by Mark Wagner and Heather Carey who will interpret Millstone Bluff's 'stone forts' created by Late Woodland people. We will also visit petroglyphs and the Mississippian component at Millstone. We will break for lunch (a brought lunch). At 1:30 we will meet at Kincaid Mounds for a tour and talk by Paul Welch and Brian Butler. Kincaid Mounds is a nationally significant American Indian treasure. It is Mississippian mounded site and a National Historic Landmark. Departure will be on your own after the Kincaid tour ends at 2:30. This guided tour is a fundraiser for Powell Archaeological Research Center, whose mission is to preserve cultural resources at and around Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Your support of this event will be used for this purpose. In case of rain, the alternative day is Nov. 14. Lunches are not provided, please bring your own supplies. These will be small groups to adhere to distance guidelines.
